A penny and an orange
Christmas is for stockings.
So, of course,
I’ll extrapolate
that theme into socks.
Tradition holds:
(both my mother and
mother mother-in-law
always concurred)
every stocking must
have a penny and an
orange.
In the early
1900’s whether a
city child or
a country child
of limited means
your stocking held
the prerequisite coin
and fruit.
Today oranges are readily
available and a penny
is scorned.
But the stockings
of my heart still
hold a penny and
an orange.
