In June 2000 friends gathered in a lovely garden in
Tiverton, RI,
to have tea and proffer gifts for Sassy's first granddaughter.
Sassy's crocheted blanket was the centerpiece of a laundry basket
of Nana's gifts to welcome grand baby Grace. It became her blankie.
30 by 43" it's a 2 dbl, 1hdc shell pattern inspired by a pattern called Daffy Dilly.
During the shower each guest wrapped a circle of yarn around
her wrist and passed the skein to the next woman. Then each
friend gave a blessing for Grace. We were to wear the bracelet
until Grace arrived.
Nana wished that Grace would grow-up to be as dear as her
mother. And then her mother wished that she would come soon and swiftly.
Grace Helena was born several days later, one month early. July 7, 2001.
When Jame's BFF Penny called to ask when Grandpa Jim and Nana
would be coming, Nana replied, “In a couple of weeks.”
Penny said, “But Jame is in the hospital. The baby is
on
her way.” The next day we traveled to Providence to meet
Grace.
