Sassy Version:

Size 8 needle
Worsted weight yarn uses about 1/2 skein.

Cast on 96 stitches
2 by 2 rib

Row 1: Work all sts in 2 by 2 rib.
Row 2: Work 2 by 2 to the last 2 stitches, turn work.
Row 3: Sl 1, work 3 stitches, place marker, work to last 2 stitches, turn work.
Row 4: Sl 1, work 3 stitches, place the second marker, work to next marker turn work.
Row 5: Remove marker, sl1, work 3 stitches, replace the marker, work to next marker, turn work.
Repeat row 5 until your have 28 stitches on each side and 40 in the center.
Row 6: Do not remove marker, sl1, work to next marker, turn work.
28 stitches on each side and 40 for the center.
Row 7: Sl 1, work to marker, remove marker, work 4 stitches, replace marker, turn work.
Repeat row 7 until 2 stitches remain outside the markers.
Row 8: Sl1, work to marker, remove marker, work to last 2 stitches.
Work 1 more row, removing final marker.

Bind off.
Sew on button. Use first two stitch opening as the buttonhole or sew ends together.

The number of rows would be about 16 rows in each direction.
It is less than then given for the original pattern because there are fewer stitches.
