Blue Christmas

On December 18th, 1970
Allen Lee Richards died.

He left behind a wife,
two young children, and
a grieving extended family.

He was 28 years old.

The Partridge Family's
version of "Blue Christmas"
was played everywhere
that Christmas season.

All these years later
the song affirms that
all seasons have their blue
threads.

My color choices are most
often soft and muted...
pink, cinnamon or
butter yellow.

My patterns are predictable:
The yarns are compatible.
The stitches are firm.
My repeats are even numbered.

No room for the burst of:
thin silky thread or
thick fluffy accents.

Although I envy knitters
albeit from afar their
joy in "making it up" as they
go, I'm staid, knitting to form.

So, although I concede
that life's pattern has
blue threads (sorrows)
that in the overall landscape
create beauty. It is difficult
to pick up the unexpected strand
and knit it into your life.

Christmas, as the song says,
will be white and red and green
but not without blue.

We lost a friend yesterday.
Today I knit with blue.

Oh Pat, I'm sorry you lost a friend yesterday. I love your philosophical approach in this post using the blue thread. Back in 1970 was Allen your brother?
