The United States Christmas stamps
issued on October 25 are titled
"Holiday Knits."
How about that?
Nancy Stahl knitted
a stag, tree, snowman
and bear.
Her designs were inspired
by Norwegian sweater graphics.
Ms. Stahl knitted Norwegian Christmas
stockings before knitting her stamp images.
She drew her designs on a computer
software program that translated the
designs into stitches and rows.
She downloaded her designs onto
an electronic knitting machine which
knitted her creations.
Unhappy with the result. The
gauge was too small. Stahl
downloaded her designs onto
a second knitting machine which
uses punch cards.
The images were then
returned to the computer
for photographic touch up
and to insure that the rows
and stitches lined up.
How exciting!
I would have to say
knitting has gone high tech.
And me, I read half the article
before I realized the images
were to be machine knit.
Thank God!
I haven't been bitten
by the knitting machine bug.
YET!
