Musings

My screen saver
looks like a
shaving cream
derived sock.

Weird!

I read an article about
a girl who knits
gremlins into her
hat patterns to
exorcise her demons.

Good gracious!

Another woman has
compiled a book of
patterns that create
knitted dolls. They
are replicas of famous
people: think Elvis.

Hmm! Not my bag.

I saw a photo
of a knitted hat that
had cables made
to look like braids,
ear flapping down
the sides.

Cool!
You need to send
away for the pattern.
Too bad!

For years I've read
patterns that opine
that one could do
a provisional cast-on.

Nice!

No explanation, given.

Finally on a foray
to knitting bookstore heaven
(Books 'A Million, Bradenton, Florida,)

I read the recipe
for provisional cast-on.
Crochet a chain to
the needed length plus
two stitches.

With me?

Now knit in stockinette
or stitch of choice to the
predetermined length.

NOW if you used
a contrasting color
(make life easy for yourself)
you can rip out the initial chain...
pick up the first row of stitches
and knit in a different direction.

How good is that?

I'm not quite sure
why I would go to
all that trouble but
I'll think on it.

But I am enamored
of the concept.

Provisional Cast-on Life 101
Do a few rows.
Rip it!
Pick up those stitches.
Travel in a whole new direction.

Pat, you have such a talent for analogy and for using analogy in your knitting, reading, and thoughts (for example:)

What a perfect summary,
