Another Christmas, almost 2012, I can't believe it. Couldn't let the year end without wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

In my other life... you know the one before I was seventy I was a weaver. I spent many years at the Weaver's Shed and my own studio happily pounding away on my looms.

Sad to say my weaving has been neglected over the retirement years. But lo and behold the grand girls discovered my secret stash and fell in love handwoven treasures.

So, I traded. I would share my weaving largess in return for modeling and Christmas photos.

So, I'm delighted to share my own brand of Christmas magic.

Before the Sassy One was a knitting blogger, she was a weaver. Daughter #3 (yours truly) wore this sweet apron for picture day in the first grade: it was the advent of the Little House on the Prairie TV show era. Underneath was a navy blue calico dress with puffed sleeves (thanks Anne with an E) and the tiniest lace trim, also sewn by the Sassy One, if you're playing along at home for trivia points.

In recent years, the apron lives at my house and my girls have worn it for a school field trip to the Old Schoolhouse, sort of like a living history museum for a few days a year. They encourage everybody to dress up and bring a picnic snack. I packed raisins in a canning jar. She didn't eat them. She did come home asking for a wooden hula-hoop for Christmas. It does the historical hearts of Mom and Nana proud.

Inspired by Grandma Richards lovely afghans

dubbed "shiver blankets." Jenn used multiple

yarn colors and weights to create this potpourri

of Easter fantasy.

Easter Bunny Slippers

Sassy adapted Mary Gaines Grandma's Slippers pattern

and changed the name to Easter bunny slippers to

delight the heart of Ms. Frances my eight-year-old

birthday girl when the bunny comes.

Shush! Don't tell.

Yarn: Simply Soft variegated.

Single strand.

Needle: Size 8.

Cast on 32 stitches.

Row 1: knit.

Row 2: Knit 10, P1, Knit 10, P1, Knit 10.

Repeat the two rows for 15 ridges.

End on row 2.

Row 1: P1, K1.

Row 2: K1, P1.

12 rows.

Cut an 8 inch strand of yarn,

draw through the stitches, gather,

to form the toe and sew ribbed edges

together.

Sew the center back.

Add buttons or bows.

Twinkle toe through the tulips.

Harlequin Boot Slipper

I felted it. Yea!

I took the leap.

Put the slipper in the washing machine

in hot water with two hand towels to agitate.

I checked faithfully every five minutes

until the body was willing but the soul was weary.

I let the machine zing for about thirty minutes.

See! A boot slipper felted.

It is quite fuzzy.

I might stop sooner and use a lingerie bag next time.

I stuffed it with paper towel to shape it.

I need some tips on invisible stitching.

The felting did not obliterate all the stitches.

Now I need some grand girls to model the boot

for future size adjustments.

All and all I am delighted with this project.

Easy House Slippers

Knuffle Bunny

Knuffle Bunny was inspired by Mo Willems' Knuffle Bunny books.

KB was crocheted by Laura White with finishing touches complements

of JR.

Knuffle Bunny is a little girl's stuffed animal/security toy/blanket.

In the books KB gets left behind or switched with another bunny,

resulting in late night trips by the Dad to get Knuffle Bunny back.
This is a new book series for me.

I am enchanted with the concept of crafting book characters.

Bumblebee

The bumblebee hat is an adaptation of a pattern by

Erssie Major in Creative Knitting Magazine: "Child's Play."

The original pattern was designed for preemies using

Debbie Bliss yarn.

Sassy's Hat:

1 skein of Simply Soft: sunshine

1 skein of Simply Soft: black

Size 8 circular needle

Gauge: 16 stitches to 4 inches

Cast on 80 stitches.

Join.

Start with 8 rounds of black.

Sequence gold and black: alternating

every four rows.

Start the new color, knit for one round,

slip the first stitch on the second round.

This system creates a visually pleasing

line.

Knit for 6 inches.

Decrease 10 stitches every other row

until 10 stitches remain.

Close the circle.

I used fuzzy sticks (pipe cleaners) for the antennae.

You could also use two groups of 5 stitches

to create opposing I-Cords.

Hair Ribbons for Spring

Enchantment. I am smitten with hair ribbons.

The grand girls voted for the hair band with the

leaves atop as a favorite.

So, Sassy knitted hair ribbons

composed of leaves into 18 inch

strips and joined the ends to

create a circle.

I am committed to knitting my way

into a colorful spring.

Don't read the New York weather forecast.

4 to 6 inches of snow due in the next

24 hours.

Hilda Ogden, a charwoman, was the main character

in the famous UK soap opera Coronation Street.
I have adapted a delightful pattern named Hilda Ogden.
Hilda brings to mind our own Rosie the Riveter

and the Irish charwoman Mammy.

I down sized the original pattern

(see MY AMPHETAMINES AND MY PURLS for the original)

to a size eight needle and two less stitches.

I started and ended each row with a single knit stitch.

Cast on 12 stitches.

Row 1 knit across.
Row 2 k1, yarn forward, sl1pw, k1, end row with k1.
Row 3 k1, * yarn forward, sl1pw, k2 tog, repeat from the * across, end k1.

Repeat row 3 for 19 inches.
Finishing: Pickup 12 stitches, using an eight inch length of yarn,

gather beginning and ending stitches to form a circle.
Weave in ends.
The band is worn with the circle

in the center at the top of the head.

You could add a flower or a bow to add flair.

Reminiscence: the forties live on.

Husband commemorated Heart Month

with two visits to the cardiac wing

of the local hospital.

It has led me to wonder how other

people survive the wait and worry process

without knitting.

The Calorimetry head scarf in the photo

was knit in one four hour stretch:

from check-in to release.

Sassy has quickly been designated

"the knitter."

I shared my version of the pattern

with the recovery room nurse.

Yarn: Lion Brand: "Amazing"

Gauge: 4 stitches to the inch.

Size 8 needle.

Cast on 96 stitches.

Row 1: K2, P2 to last two stitches, pm.

Row: 2 P2, K2 to last two stitches, pm.

On row 1 knit to pm, remove pm, turn,

knit 4 stitches, replace the pm, knit to the end

of the row ( last 2 stitches), repeat the sequence.

Work in this manner until you have

30 stitches on each end

and 36 for center.

Knit 1 row even.

Reverse the process.

K to marker, remove pm,

knit 4 stitches, replace pm.

Turn.

Continue until only last 2 stitches on row 1 remain,

remove pm, knit the end of the row, turn

k to last pm, remove it, knit to the end of the row.

Bind off.

Sew it together or use a button

as a clasp.

Enjoy.

Winter White

aptly named winter white.

Moomins

Moomins are technically trolls, but they look like hippos.

They come from Finland circa 1940/50s and on. Books, comic strips...

The Japanese did animation of them before anime and such.

There's a theme park in Finland that's like their Disneyland.

A museum with all Tove Jansson's work, including fine art and such.

And Finnair planes have Moomins painted on them. Such an education

for all of us.

Tam-O'-Shanter

This is the Sassy Pat version of tam-o'-shanter.

* By Webster's definition:

Tam-o'-shanter: a Scottish cap with a round, flat top

and, often, a center tassel.

As you can see I skipped the tassel.

The tam is knit with one skein of Amazing (see Lion brand).

The pattern is an adaptation of WW022 RollinBeret

from Wooly Wormwood posted on Ravelry.

I cast on 72 stitches.

K2,P2 for an 1.5 inches.

Knit one row.

K2, increase 1 all the way around.

Place a marker every 19 stitches.

Knit for 4.75 inches.

Crown:

Knit two together before each marker

every row until 6 stitches remain.

I did not block it.

I wanted it to have more definition.

The Colorways create the illusion

The Manga Girl is loosely based on Hastsune Miku.

The Manga figures have oversized heads and small bodies.

The pattern is a simple doll pattern with an oversized head.

Add a ton of hair and huge eyes (two layers of buttons).

The hair and eyes are common manga features.

Hatsune Miku is an animated singer and part of

a Manga series named Vocaloid.

Manga Girl is the work of # 2 daughter,

Jennifer Ann.

It is 53% wool and 47% acrylic.

The color is Aurora.

50g equals 147 yards.

So far, I have knitted two hats,

two berets (What is the difference

between a tam and a beret? I must

look into that.) and I've started

a scarf.

Husband would say, "Buy Lion Brand Stock."

Anyway it is all part of my plan to start

the new year right. So, I deemed that

January shall be amazing, just absolutely

amazing in every way.

Dear Maddy,

My blog post Ruffles was for a spiral scarf.

If memory serves me the knit two together

was with a wrap around stitch. So, when you knit

the wrap and stitch you don't get a decrease.

Google wrap and turn.

MC Stanly Yelnats is under a curse. Stanley has been unjustly sent to a boys'

detention center, Camp Green Lake. The warden makes the boys "build character" by

digging holes: five feet wide and five feet deep. The warden it seems is looking for

something. Stanley tries to dig up the truth.

Yoga sock:

a neatly stitched circle borders

the hole where the sock heel should be...

complemented by a ribbed border encompassing

the opening where the toe would normally reside.

Stanley digs holes.

I knit holes...

of a lesser dimension, of course

and with a certain amount of glee.

These double holed socks

prove to be a charming accessory

for the young and agile...

the students of Yoga or ballet.

My fitness disappeared into

a hole greater than five by five...

years ago.

But the socks with holes

create the illusion that

containment is possible

and edged properly a hole

can be a thing of beauty.

It only requires that one

ignore what is missing and/or

add a bottom layer beneath

the hole.

Q: I am interested in your choice of title. The concept of embarking on a quest is intriguing.
Why did you choose knitting for your quest? Was it a writing quest as well?

The Quest really started when I read Julie Powell's Julie and Julia. In the shower the morning after I'd finished it, I started to think about who the knitting world's Julia Child would be. While I know there are at least a dozen of them (just like in the cooking world, too), my personal Julia is Alice Starmore. And the cover image for her Tudor Roses collection has always been rattling around in my head.

Q: You opine that knitters are obsessive. Are writers also obsessive, do you think?
How would you characterize your writing process?

I've never felt entirely comfortable talking about writing processes, since every writer is unique in terms of approach. For me - and your mileage will vary - process is about regularity and routine. I do my best to write something every day, even if it's just a small blog entry. I don't know if writers are obsessive so much as insatiably curious. If I hadn't had a deadline, I could have spent years doing the research and reading and interviews without ever writing a word.

Q: If you could start this journey over what would you do differently?
What did you learn about yourself?

If I could do it over, I wouldn't have ignored the sweater for the better part of the summer. The last few weeks of knitting were a challenge. What I learned is that I am not a product knitter, not really. I've turned into a knitter who deeply enjoys the process.

Q: What is your super power… the quality that allowed you to finish both the book
and the sweater?

I have no super power, just a tolerant family. Beyond that, it helps that I live in a small town and my commute to the college where I teach is less than two minutes. You'd be surprised how much time you have in your day when you don't have to drive for miles and miles in heavy traffic.

Q: What are you wishing I would get around to asking?

That's one of my favorite interview questions, too. Um. "Would you like an all-expenses paid trip to Fair Isle?"

I was reading Adrienne Martini's blog and saw photos of her children

visiting fairy houses. I searched about in cyberspace and found that

you can see fairy houses on Monhegan Island, Maine

I called to tell daughter #3 about this wonder.

She replied, Frances (GD # 2) has several fairy house books.

She loves them.

Tonight as Husband and I trekked around the neighborhood

for our nightly constitutional I found wonders: dried palm branches,

twigs, moss, shells. I think my garden deserves a fairy house.

What do you think grand girls?

An island in Maine... hmm.

Grandmothers and fairies both love islands

and sea coats and...

Memorial Day... I am

reading _Writing Toward Home_.

I am remembering home.

Home is New York... the Hudson River,

the Catskill mountains.

Georgia Heard defines my longing as querencia.

Querencia describes a place where one feels safe,

a place from which ones strength of characater is drawn,

a place where one feels at home. It comes from the verb

'querer,' which means to desire or want.

Today I knit long rounds of k2, p2,

and name my longing in Spanish.

Later I shall use this definitive word

as a writing prompt.

Ode to My Socks

Pablo Neruda

Mari Mori brought me

a pair of socks

which she knitted herself

with her sheepherder's hands,

two socks as soft as rabbit.

I slipped my feet into them

as if they were two cases

knitted with threads of twilight and goatskin,

Violent socks,

my feet were two fish made of wool,

two long sharks

sea blue, shot through

by one golden thread,

two immense blackbirds,

two cannons,

my feet were honored in this way

by these heavenly sock.

They were so handsome for the first time

my feet seemed to me unacceptable

The moral of my ode is this:

beauty is twice beauty

and what is good is doubly good

when it is a matter of two socks

made of wool in winter.

Rapunzel

Daughter # 2 had a dream or

perhaps it should be deemed a nightmare.

She was locked in a tower and unable to

find the door needed for her exit.

We laughed.

I recommended a Rapunzel solution.

She lamented that her hair grows slowly.

Alas.

This morning as I was awaiting her Sunday

call I leafed through the special edition of

"Knitscene."

And lo and behold.

There was a knitting pattern for a Rapunzal scarf.

In essence:

2.25 inches wide and 108 inches long

4 skeins of Malabrigo Gruesa yarn

Size 15 double pointed needles

Make a 4 stitch I-cord with skein one until it runs out.

Repeat for the other 3 skeins.

Wrap a 30 inch strand around all four cords.

Braid loosely.

Even the cords and with a 6 inch tail gather cords together.

Wrap the assembled cords with another 30 inch strand.

Finished.

You are rescued.

Of course given the height of the tower

you might need to adjust your lengths

and the number of skeins needed.

But I am sure that your are as resourceful

as Rapunzel.

Jack fell down and broke his crown

Husband is recovering

and Jill is still tumbling.

which means the back brace

will come off... God willing

and the creek don't rise.

I have been taking a writing class.

The prompts were meant to explore

scent and color.

Guess what?

Scent and color have disappeared

along with my knitting.

So, today I am knitting socks...

of course, it would be socks

with some Bernat Jacquard yarn...

shades of green, purple, yellow

patterning into an approximation

of a Fair Isle design.

Time to reconfigure a knitter's life.

Husband fell and broke his back.

He was airlifted to the nearest trauma

center.

are trying to put him together

again.

I am not really

missing-in-action,

Floundering would be

the more appropriate word.

I have neuropathy.

Now doesn't that sound deadly?

It means that it hurts

to knit using my left hand

and since I haven't figured

out how to do without said hand

I have not been knitting.

Sometimes I sneak up on lefty

and knit a few rows on an

old project before it catches

me.

Therefore, I have not been

on the blog. Didn't think

that you needed to hear me

whine and complain.

Florida has finally warmed up.

So, I'm surfing for spring-like

projects consoling myself that

my hand will relent and let

me knit in the next season.

Warm/Red Cool/Red

Husband is taking an art course

i.e. color theory. The instructor

is differentiating between

warm red and cool red.

Thus, the old folks are

playing I Spy. You remember

I Spy. You say I see something red

and then the other person has to guess

what it is. You taught your children

their colors that way.

When we say I Spy you have to guess the object,

then designate the red as warm or cool.

Back to childhood games...

learning one's colors

over again.

Anyway I'm taking it another

step. I'm knitting red socks--

they are a cool red--

meant to keep little girls'

cold feet warm.

Bundled in

my many layers

nestled in loft warmth

I knit while

Florida temperatures dip...

to freezing.

The orchids are scattered

on the den floor. The lemon

tree and hibiscus are blanketed

against the expected wind chill.

We've traded snow days

for cold days.

Half A Hat

You have heard of

a half a house.

Before you... you see

a half a hat knitted

by daughter #2.

I love the color sequence.

But then again, of course,

I would. We can go into

any store and come out

with the same purchase

on any given item

While Jenn zooms

away on her hat project

I am snared by the 2-in-1

sock puzzle.

Kudos please.

I have the 2-in-1 stitches on

and they are knitted into

two separate layers

(one within the other).

Shush!

The knitting goddess punishes braggarts.

I have learned that if you want to make anything

but the smallest size sock you need longer needles

(I'm using 6 inch double points). And it

would behoove the knitter to knit American style

with the right hand and Continental with the left.

A skill to be practiced another day...

We won't talk about the parameters

of putting in the heels. The day

is sufficient unto itself.

The Sassy One and daughter #2

are enjoying a knitting feast...

a binge if you will...

a long time ago. Duh!

Nowadays all those

I decided to surprise myself--

a goal for the new year.

I'm going to decode

the magic hidden in EZ's

pattern... God willing

and I watch the DVD

more than a few times.

I always want to call the pattern

Our pre-Christmas rituals are right on target.

They follow a preordained pattern year after year.

The house gets snippy and has a breakdown

during the yuletide. Husband is replacing a beam

in the wall with a few well chosen words...

not be repeated in Christmas company.

The mailman delivers photos of friends'

grandchildren and messages from afar.

My heart flutters.

I fiddle with a new knitting pattern.

Guess what? I discovered that

the fringe I'm stressing about is really just

the same sequence I used for Sean's Mohawk hat

last year. Duh! Nana, kick it up.

Yesterday I read the Yarn Harlot's blog.

She is learning to weave on a rigid heddle loom.

She wove a lovely plaid scarf.

And I caught the wave.

In my other life...

you know the one

where you were young

and foolish. I was

a weaver.

I have three looms

and all the accessories

and haven't touched a loom

for maybe ten years.

Weaving is time consuming.

It requires patience and

and a steady beat.

It faded out of my life.

All those skills lost...

atrophied from lack

of use.

But yesterday all that enchantment

it just flooded back. I could be a

weaver again.

Another step back

into another era...

I feel a great desire

to grasp another lapsed

joy.

I have been knitting.

Took the knitting backpack

to Orlando for the stamp show

and to Mt. Dora to enjoy the

Christmas lights. Had a fine

dinner with a cousin I hadn't

seen in years.

Guess you could say I

have been picking up stitches.

The Christmas knitting is in the mail.

My newest passion would be scarves

knitted lengthwise and listening

to Enya sing Christmas music.

I wasn't really lost

just misplaced.

The world went to the mall

for Black Friday.

The Sassy one doesn't do

Black Friday. She does

White Saturday.

White Saturday is dedicated

to nibbling turkey, sorting yarn,

interspersed with watching

Husband trim the orange tree,

and walking in the park.

One sock knitted in light green wool

with flecks of red and blue-- a nod to

the season's color scheme-- and one to go.

It wouldn't do to have the son-in-law

hobble around with one sock on and

one bare foot.

There are two skeins labeled

red fox waiting in the wings.

Maybe later she'll order a couple of books and

then mail a few checks in the middle

of week. Christmas is coming

along nicely.

The size eight circular needle

has a cowl eight rows tall.

The self striping colors

tease the imagination.

has the a cowl cast-on

with the leftover Noro yarn--

a match for the Noro mitts

that live in CT.

Random knitting for a

mismatched life.

One friend had great news:

good lab reports and another

friend was promptly hospitalized.

Long story short...

the first finger on my left

for six months. You've got

in a soft camel hue.

Worsted weight.

80 stitches

Size 10 needle

K3, P1 TBL.

Round and round we go.

Purling into the back of the stitch

produces a ridge on the inside of the circle.

This accessory should be worn inside out.

To set the record straight,

none of children or grandchildren

like turtlenecks or garments that hug the neck.

But this twisted sister is knitting a cowl--

a poor man's fisherman knit neck warmer--

for the sheer joy of twisting.

As Chubby Checker used to say, "Let's twist!"

Trick or Treat

Sassy Pat is still fussing with thumbs.

Put 'em, take 'em out.

A witch of a job...

But she's learned

some new tricks.

Knit a couple of rows beyond the cuff.

Put about 8 stitches on a thread

at the starting join.

Cast-on four stitches.

Continue knitting.

When you go back to pick-up

the thumb add a couple of stitches

on either side of the cast-on.

Knit about 9 rows.

CO.

Also, for one set of mitts

she just cast off eight stitches

and continued to knit for

five or six rows.

Eureka! An opening...

a mini thumb.

You can also do a conventional thumb

and bind off short of the thumb decreases

and not draw your thread through

to create gathers.

Time for a treat...

I'm fifteen rows from finishing

another mitt.

Confession:

I've been zipping along... three sets of mitts done,

ALMOST.

But I haven't knitted the thumbs.

It is fussy work:

so few stitches, such a tiny space...

Guess what?

You do the math.

I need to knit 6 thumbs.

I need an old fashioned pep talk.

Get a move on, girl.

Take the needles in hand

and just do it.

And you'll have

three pairs of thumps up

A writing friend,

a kindred spirit,

a compassionate woman,

has been diagnosed

with a rare form of cancer.

And I'm looking for some way

to comprehend catastrophe.

My mother had a mending basket.

You remember the kind:

wicker with a satin padded lining.

It held needles and pins and bobbins.

My mother didn't like to sew.

But she loved to mend.

I remember her darning socks

with consummate skill.

I rummage about in my work basket.

I have needles blunt and sharp,

crochet hooks of all sizes

and a weaver's shuttle.

But unlike my mother who was a

great prayer warrior I seem

to have no skill at mending.

My penchant for ripping out

and starting over precludes

mending.

I can't remember what happened

to Mama's lovely old fashioned basket.

But the memory of it is clear.

I picture Mama's fine stitches

repairing the rent in a sock...

an almost invisible seam.

I pray to Mama:

Help me mend

the tear in my soul.

Terra Cotta Weather

Halloween:

I don't do pumpkins,

scarecrows, dried corn.

So, of course, I made the leap

to cotton yarn in Terra cotta--

a lovely orange hue--

to commemorate the occasion.

My pattern choice...

a girlie summer top

with straps.

Now! Now!

Don't get excited.

I haven't lost my cool.

I know my seasons.

Ms. Frances doesn't like

sleeves or heavy weight vests,

and she likes her accessories

to be feminine.

Thus, Sassy Pat

is knitting what you

might call a sundress vest

in an autumn color to be worn

over tees with one's best jeans.

Trendsetters we will be,

if you will , or maybe

just plain eccentric.

I'm off to mull cider

and knit in the round

and dream of Halloween

candy.

Designated Driver

We all know about

the designated driver.

It is the good friend tapped

to drive everyone home

when the ball is over.

Well, I am working

with a mitten pattern

that requires each needle

to carry its own sequence...

a designated needle, if you will.

Not new for some folks

but a new twist

I enjoy watching

each pattern emerge

and then blend into

a circular whole...

a panorama.

Makes me wonder

on this chilly October morning

and have deemed it

to knit Continental.

It is easier to follow all

those demonstrations on YouTube.

And I'm having a little fling

with Fair Isle.

I can report that I've completed

k1, p1 for about four inches.

The tension doesn't match my

accustomed tight circle but

it is pretty okay.

So, I'll hokey pokey along.

We are off to the White Mountains of New Hampshire

to celebratea friend's 80th birthday.

Such a lovely way to end

the month of August...

the first leaf turn of the season.

the nip in the air,

the fall colors,

all the new yarns and patterns

to tease a knitter's heart.

Knit:

A bulky sweater, or mittens, or leg warmers, with hat to match...

in gold, red, blue or, chocolate brown .
Choose chunky or worsted weight--with or without stripes.
I'll let the landscape be my guide.

A baby bib called "Baby Love."

It's a freebie pattern on Knitting Central.

Knitted with Sugar N' Creme cotton

it is a bargain at $1.79.

And I might be able to inch out another bib

if I cross my fingers and hold my breath and

make tiny stitches on the bind off.

Call it mindless summer knitting.

Garnet is pretty pretty.

This Little Pig

Do you remember the nursery rhyme:

"This little pig goes to market?"

This little sock is going to Gore Mountain

to mine for garnet... ruby red garnet that

sparkles in the sun.

North Creek, NY... the Adirondack Mountains.

The whole gang gets to play:

Sean, Kyle, Grace, and Frances.

And the grownups, of course.

With pails and shovels

and rock hammers and treats

along the way.

Won't we have fun.

Such a lucky little sock.
