As many faithful readers will remember
I have an ongoing romance with the
concept of the "begging bowl."
Sue Bender in _Everyday Sacred_
wrote about the legend of monks
who go out into the world everyday
with their empty begging bowls
to allow the universe to fill it or not
at the fate's discretion.
So, I deemed my lovely chocolate
wool yarn as my choice to knit
a begging bowl with the intent
of felting it.
I worried my choice of pattern
until Husband said with his
infinite wisdom, "It is only
an upside down hat."
Indeed!
Upward and onward I commenced to knit.
If I do say so I am happy
happy with said bowl.
I researched the felting process.
Yes! Great instructions.
Followed directions carefully.
But alas I failed to heed the last
bit of wisdom... if the yarn contains
any acrylic fiber, IT Will NOT FELT.
Checking the fiber content after
the fact reveals that indeed the
lovely chocolate yarn has a very
high acrylic content.
In one of life's strange
happen stances I am
still delighted with my bowl
felted or not.
I shall live to felt another day.
For today, my emptiness is filled.

I'm so impressed that you made a bowl! Your three-dimensional take on everything is now turned upside down! (Of course a bowl is a hat turned upside down, but you can make them shallow or wide or cone-ish...the possibilities are endless.) I can't wait to see where this takes you. And felted too!
Pat, how perfect! YOu did it! As you can see, busy-ness has kept me from doing my post on begging bowls but it's so wonderful to see you've created your own knitted begging bowl. It sounds like all is well for you -- may your bowl be filled today.
